In a dry installation the pumps are not submerged in the pumped liquid, but installed next to the sump.
In dry-installations, the pumps can be installed horizontally or vertically. The common advantages of a horizontal installation are:
- simplified piping with fewer bends
- an even suction flow to the impeller, and
- a lower pump position
The motor on a dry-installed pump requires a form of cooling. This could be a cooling jacket that allows an external liquid or the pumped liquid to flow around the motor house. On Grundfos SE1/SEV pumps, the motor house is made of solid aluminium and therefore does not require special cooling in a dry installation.
The trend is going toward dry-installed pumps rather than submerged pump installations. This is mainly due to the working environment for servicing the pumps.
